Writer-director’s John Lacy’s new indie feature “Everyone Asked About You” starring Rachel Bailit pulls back the curtain on Hollywood’s darker side, exposing the intense pressures faced by young actors and the lasting impact on their adult lives.
The film had its national premiere last month at the Golden State Film Festival in Hollywood at the iconic Mann’s Chinese Theater where it won the Grand Prize for Best Picture.
The film centers around Simone, a former child star portrayed by Rachel Bailit (“Desperate Housewives,” “General Hospital”), as she navigates the treacherous waters of her acting career as an adult. Simone’s struggle with fame, relationships, and personal identity takes a dramatic turn when her longtime producing partner and boyfriend Jack, played by John Lacy (“Joker: Folie à Deux,” “American Crime Story”), manipulates her and places her in a compromising position.
“Everyone Asked About You” boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Ballit, Lacy, Mike Wiles, Patrick Gallagher, Werner Daehn, Brea Bee, Khrystyne Haje, and Henry Jaglom.
In a notable addition to the cast, California State Treasurer and SAG-AFTRA member Fiona Ma makes a special cameo appearance. Before her career in public service, Ma worked in the entertainment industry, appearing in films and commercials. This experience gave her firsthand insight into the challenges faced by actors, particularly young performers. Ma’s cameo in the film is part of her ongoing efforts to use every platform available to drive social change including her long-standing commitment to ending human trafficking, combating domestic violence, empowering victims, and breaking cycles of abuse. As Lieutenant Governor, she pledges to continue fighting for survivor protections, stronger workplace safety laws, and policies that uplift the most vulnerable in California.
“Everyone Asked About You” employs a unique visual style to enhance its storytelling. Flashback scenes set in a bungalow are presented in timeless black-and-white, while present-day moments unfold in vivid color, creating a stark contrast between past and present. The production team brings a wealth of experience to the project. Led by John Lacy, the team includes producer Ursula Rudorfer and cinematographer Denis Maloney ASC.
The film will later this month in San Francisco at the Marina and Presidio Theaters and at the Las Vegas Film Festival in April. You can catch the film back in Los Angeles for a screening at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute on April 16th.
We sat down with actress Rachel Bailit and Producer/Director/Writer John Lacy for an exclusive interview.
Q: Rachel, what about this project attracted you?
Rachel: The opportunity to be a part of a truly independent film that has height art, grit and purpose. It was my dream to work with John Lacy as a director and actor. Most of all, it was the chance to finally have a role that is complicated, multifaceted and embodies all aspects of being human. Intriguing to me was exploring the child and woman living simultaneously in both relationship and within the constricts of Hollywood
Q: How much did you relate to this story as an actress in Hollywood?
Rachel: About seventy percent. I was not a child star but began acting at a young impressionable age. Thankfully, I was never assaulted but had many unwanted advances on and off set. A variety of promises were implied by male producers. I relate to the struggle of my character and accepting jobs that feel below my worth. I can relate to be sexualized in roles and costumes. And lastly, I relate to being stereotyped because of my naturally well-endowed figure.
Q: Why do you think it’s important to highlight some of the darker sides of this industry?
Rachel: I think it’s important because change will only happen when toxic behavior within Hollywood is exposed, and safety provisions are created. Actors need to be educated on how to create, demand and install boundaries. We’ve made some progress in this area through SAG-AFTRA but it’s often what happens off set that is the most damaging.
John: The story of Jack and Simone is not uncommon. It’s the kind of sordid story that the Hollywood studios are reluctant to tell for obvious reasons. The disproportionate power dynamic in the entertainment industry creates far too many unhealthy relationships where young artists put into uncomfortable positions and asked to compromise who they are.
Q: How important was Treasurer Ma’s involvement in the film?
Rachel: Fiona Ma’s involvement with our film has been tremendous. Fiona has spent her career for supporting survivors of abuse and wants to shed light on these issues and push for meaningful change. As a strong female running for Lieutenant Governor, we feel proud to have her champion our film. She is enthusiastic and always encouraging us to think bigger with our project. Proud to act along this fellow talented SAG-AFTRA actress.
John: With every film I have made I have trusted that the right elements will fall into place to see the film from development to completion. Often someone unexpected comes into your life and shows an interest in both the project, and the passion of those involved and decides they want to help. Meeting Fiona and havingher agree to play a cameo in our filmwas a game-changer. Since our very first day on set, she has taken us under her wing and done so much to help spread awareness and promote our Indie film.
Q: What’s next for you both?
Rachel: I want to see this movie through the next year. I can’t dream of a more fulfilling role (yet). Gena Rowlands set the standard for me while John Cassavetes has been an enormous influence on John. Hence, we will campaign for the John Cassavetes Award at the The Independent Spirit Awards next year.
John: Next up, I play opposite Rahda Mitchell in a film called “The Gardner.” I’m directing a play “Nylon” by Sofia Alvarez at The Zephyr Theater in Los Angeles, opening May 2nd.
Q: For our young readers, can you share 3 tips for other actresses entering the industry?
Rachel: Commit to acting training. I studied and now teach at The Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute. The training prepared me to take on this role and work with confidence and skill.
Find mentors. There are no rules how to do this and it can be a slippery slope. Find someone who has great morals, will be honest with you, and is inspirational.
Always be yourself and listen to your own intuition. The answers are within.
