Actor Brian J. White became an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances Thursday when he, along with several of his neighbors, apprehended an arson suspect with a blowtorch in Woodland Hills, making a citizen arrest until the police got there. He shared the harrowing experience with Deadline, spoke how the police work and fight training for roles helped him in the ordeal and what the reaction has been from his colleagues, including the cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution where he is recurring, to seeing him in a viral cell video of the incident shot by White’s wife, Paula Da Silva, and their next-door neighbor.
Like others in the path of the Kenneth Fire, which broke out in the neighboring West Hills Thursday afternoon, the Whites got the emergency alert to get ready to potentially evacuate. By then, they had started to see the blaze from their house, “so we were just all very nervous that the fires were getting close,” White recalls.
“We were packing up, and all of a sudden, out front of our house, I hear screaming, ‘Put it down, put it down,’” White says. “I thought somebody had a gun and my neighbor was in duress, so my daughter went and hid in the closet, and I went running upstairs to go outside and help my neighbor.”
Standing on the lawn of the house next door was a neighbor from down the block telling a man holding a blowtorch to put it down after seeing him trying to ignite Whites’ trash on fire which had leaves, sticks and other flammable items in it. (The neighbor had seen the stranger on a bike try to light an old Christmas tree in the trash on his street about 20 min prior and chased after him, first on foot and then in his car, catching up with him at White’s house.)
Joined by a third neighbor, White says they “backed the guy against our neighbor’s house that he was standing in front of, asking him why he was in the neighborhood,” adding that the individual was acting erratic and “seemed a little bit out of it, a lot of out of it.”
“He then became very aggressive about being asked what he was doing here,” White says. “He said he was looking for a place to hang out. And we’re like, well, this isn’t the place to hang out.”
With their wives having already called the cops, the men decided to let the police handle the situation. But the person “became more aggressive, so we said, we’re making a citizen’s arrest,” White says. “Two of our neighbors work on cars in the garages; they had zip ties in one garage and little bit of rope in another garage. So we took him down, detained him, and waited for the police. Sixteen cruisers showed up within about seven minutes of us calling, and the rest is on the news.”
One of the neighbors, who had ridden a mountain bike in the hills toward the fire earlier in the afternoon reportedly told the sheriff that he thought he had seen the suspect in the area where the fire originated, possibly starting it.
Ultimately, LAPD said Friday morning that they didn’t have enough evidence to arrest the person for arson; he was arrested for felony probation violation.
White and his neighbors have lingering doubts. “The fires were approaching us from where that man had come from, so it was suspicious that the fires crept over close to his timing of being in our neighborhood with a blowtorch,” he says.

Throughout his career, White has played a police officer (Ghost Whisperer, Dirty), detective (The Shield, 12 Rounds, We Belong Together), Lieutenant (Moonlight) and Colonel (Hostages). It is one particular skill he had learned during his training for those roles that came in handy Thursday.
“It was more a hostage negotiating training. I’ve gone on a lot of police ride-alongs over the years, and one of the main things they talk about is staying calm and communicating,” he says. “So I was trying to clearly communicate to the gentleman that I don’t really care for an explanation. He’s standing on my property with an ignited blowtorch, so I’m just going to make sure that he waits until the police come.”
“We needed to find out if he had any weapons on him, if we were in danger,” White continues. “We tried to stay calm, and then when it got physical, we tried to make sure that it was quick, which is why we asked for other neighbors to help us with ropes and zip ties. So yeah, the training of staying calm and not overdoing it, I am thankful for everybody that’s ever trained me in police work and fire work and fighting to be prepared for moments like that.”

While now reflects on the the split-second decision to jump into action, switching to a hero-protector mode.
“I thought he had a gun when I ran right out there. My wife and daughter were scared, for that reason my daughter went and hid in the closet, she was crying, we had to talk her down for hours,” White recalls. “My first thought was, whatever’s going on out there, it’s not going to affect my wife and my daughter, I’m going to take care of it. It makes me feel good that that was my instant reaction. It makes me feel good that that was the reaction of all the neighbors that helped and responded. And it makes me feel safer in our community to know that the people in this neighborhood care about each other, not just themselves. They’re willing to take on a little harm or risk for the greater good. And that’s what community and family and extended family is about.”
If you weren’t aware of White’s involvement in the arrest even through the story was all over TV, that’s intentional. While news trucks were on his street all night, he kept declining on-camera interviews.
“I didn’t want just news for news’ sake, and we didn’t do it for publicity, we did it to keep our neighborhoods safe,” White says.
But once the cell phone video of the arrest, shot by his wife and his neighbor, started making the rounds, “we started getting calls from family and friends all over the world, Africa and Johannesburg and London, I guess this story is playing everywhere,” White says. (You can watch the video below)
Those reaching out have included many of White’s actor colleagues. “They said, you on the news? And oddly, you need a haircut,” he says, laughing. “I’m getting ready for a role, and I have an afro. So everybody was noticing that I was on the news looked different; they said that they were proud of me and to go get a haircut.”
The group that apprehended the suspect set up a neighborhood watch after the incident. Since then, every four hours there’s cars cruising around seeing if anybody’s in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the moms have started an online thread.
“Sometimes it takes tragedies and moments like this to bring communities together, because it takes a village to survive anything,” White says. “And one of the things that it did was tighten our community, maybe 20 different houses from the immediate area all met in our cul-de-sac.”
White, who has his own streaming network, World One TV, plans to be more involved in his community going forward, trying to attend neighborhood meetings and other events.
“We are a family, that is our extended family,” he says. “We all chose to live here, and this has made me keenly aware of that choice. I want to do everything I can to embrace my fellow members of my community and to know them and to help keep our community safe.”
